aromatherapy: Blending & Carrier Oils

 

 

Essential oils are too powerful and too highly concentrated to be used on their own, so they must be diluted in a carrier oil before being used in aromatherapy.

Carrier oils are classed as fixed oils because, unlike essential oils, they do not evaporate and therefore provide an excellent base for aromatherapy blends. They contain an array of vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and proteins, and have a wide range of benefits including; 먹튀검증사이트

The important of choosing a carrier oil must not be underestimated. 98% of the blend will consist of the carrier oil so it vital to choose one that matches your particular needs at that time. Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - medium - easily absorbed into the skin
Properties - rich in vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, D), minerals, linoleic, oleic, palmitic, linolenic and stearic acids.
Uses - often regarded as the most widely used carrier oil, Sweet Almond is suitable for all skin types. It helps to soften and nourish the skin, helps to soothe inflammation or irritation and helps to revitalise skin.


Apricot Kernel Oil

Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - medium - rich but light and easily absorbed into the skin
Properties - high in vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, B17, E) and linoleic, oleic and palmitic acids.
Uses - a rich, nourishing carrier oil suitable for all skin types. Helps to revitalise and moisturise the skin.


Avocado Oil

Colour - dark olive green
Viscosity - thick - luxurious, rich texture absorbed into the upper layers of skin
Properties - rich in vitamins (A, B1, B2, D, E), lecithin, minerals, protein and linoleic, oleic, palmitic and linolenic acids.
Uses - containing healing and regenerative properties, Avocado Oil is ideal for dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. It softens and smoothes the skin and helps to reduce wrinkles.


Borage Seed Oil
*commonly known as starflower oil

Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - thin to medium
Properties - borage Seed Oil has the highest concentration of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) naturally available in any plant source. It also contains vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, D, E), oleic and linoleic acids.
Uses - GLA, an Omega-6 essential fatty acid, combats inflammation, eczema, dermatitis, asthma, arthritis, diabetes and obesity. Borage Seed Oil is suitable for all skin types.


Coconut Oil

Colour - clear
Viscosity - thin - easy to spread and non-oily
Properties - a rich source of Omega 3, 6, 9 as well as vitamins (A, B1, B2, E) and minerals.
Uses - acts as an emollient to soothe and soften the skin, helps to relieve dry, itching skin, helps to prevent premature ageing and is an excellent treatment for dry scalp.


Evening Primrose Oil

Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - thin
Properties - contains a high essential fatty acid content, consisting primarily of Omega-6 Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA). Also a rich source of vitamins (B1, B2, B6, E) and minerals.
Uses - excellent in treating many skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, flaky skin, dandruff, skin ageing and inflammation. It is also useful for PMT.


Grapeseed Oil

Colour - virtually clear with a slight green tinge
Viscosity - thin - light texture that is easily absorbed into the skin
Properties - rich in linoleic acid plus vitamins (A, B, E), antioxidants and minerals.
Uses - has slight astringent properties, therefore helping to tighten and tone the skin. It is suitable for all skin types and is widely used as a base for massage blends.


Hazelnut Oil

Colour - yellow
Viscosity - thin - light texture that is easily absorbed by the skin
Properties - a rich source of oleic acid along with smaller amounts of linoleic and palmitic acids, contains vitamins (A, B, D, E) and minerals.
Uses - contains astringent properties making it ideal for oily, acne skin, encourages cell regeneration and stimulates circulation.


Jojoba Oil

Colour - golden yellow
Viscosity - medium - light, silky texture that deeply penetrates the skin
Properties - rich in vitamin E and also contains vitamins A, B1, B2 & B6.
Uses - chemically similar to that of the skin's own oil (sebum) making it ideal for use on oily or dry skin due to its balancing properties.


Macadamia Oil

Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - thick - easily absorbed by the skin
Properties - high in palmioleic acid, also contains proteins, minerals and vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, C, E).
Uses - excellent anti-ageing properties, softens and heals the skin, great strengthening and nourishing treatment for the hair.

Olive Oil

Colour - olive Green
Viscosity - thick - leaves an oily coating on the skin
Properties - rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, nutrients and oleic, palmitic, linoleic and linolenic acids.
Uses - the antioxidants help to neutralise free radicals, repairing skin damage and preventing skin ageing. Olive oil is a fantastic emollient used for nourishing the skin and promoting wound healing.


Peanut Oil

Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - thick - leaves an oil coating on the skin
Properties - rich in vitamin E, oleic and linoleic acids.
Uses - suitable for all skin types, particularly dry skin.


Sesame Oil

Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - medium to thick - spreads easily
Properties - rich in essential fatty acids such as linoleic, oleic, palmitic and linolenic acids, as well as protein, vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, D) and minerals.
Uses - suitable for all skin types, particularly dry skin, eczema and psoriasis. Contains a natural SPF so helps to protect the skin from harmful UV rays.


Soya Bean Oil

Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - thin to medium - light texture that is easily absorbed by the skin
Properties - naturally rich in essential fatty acids, lecithin, sterolins and vitamin E, it also contains vitamins A & C.
Uses - soya Bean Oil has excellent skin conditioning qualities and is useful as a treatment for inflamed and irritated skin. Suitable for all skin types.


Sunflower Oil

Colour - pale yellow
Viscosity - thin - light texture that penetrates easily into the skin
Properties - high in vitamins A, D & E, linoleic acid, protein and minerals.
Uses - suitable for all skin types and helps to relieve eczema and psoriasis.


Wheatgerm Oil

Colour - orange - brown
Viscosity - thick - leaves a sticky residue on the skin
Properties - very high vitamin E content, plus essential fatty acids such as linoleic and oleic acids.
Uses - recommended for use on scarring and problem dry skin. Often used to prevent stretch marks. Due to its high vitamin E content it acts as a natural preservative in any homemade blends.
